Due to the death of George Blumer in 1867 John and Mary was completed by Denton, Gray & Co & was the last wooden vessel to be built at Hartlepool.
Owners: John Thomas Crampton, Portsmouth.
Masters: 1868-78 S Milnes; 1879-80 WJ Meades.
Voyages: 8 July 1873 arrived Lisbon from Swansea; April 1879 damaged after a collision with a Dutch brig off Yarmouth.
Bound from Portsmouth for Hartlepool in ballast & with a crew of eight she was stranded & lost in a force 10 ENE gale near Saltburn-by-Sea in 54.35.15N/00.58W on 28 October 1880. The crew saved themselves in their ship’s boat.
An auction was held near the pier on Saltburn beach on 8 November 1880 for the whole of the wreck & materials of John and Mary. Items for sale included the masts, sails, running rigging, tow lines & stores.
