The steamship Ravensbourne sank on January 31st, 1917, after striking a mine laid by UC-31, 8 miles south-east of the Tyne. The ship was on a voyage from the Tyne to London with a cargo of coal.
Three crew were lost: Hartlepool-born 2nd Engineer Thomas Gilfoyle, George William Carter of South Shields, and Harry Harrowar from Inverkip, Renfrewshire.
