The 3,500-ton Light Cruiser HMS Arethusa, part of the Harwich Force, was damaged at the Battle of Heligoland Bight on August 28th, 1914. One Officer and ten Ratings lost their lives, including Stoker James William Dale, of West Hartlepool.
The ship herself was later mined and sunk near Harwich, on February 11th, 1916.
