The Cressy-class Armoured Cruiser Hogue, and her sister ships Cressy and Aboukir, were torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U-9, on September 22nd, 1914. Three hundred and seventy-five crewmen from the Hogue lost their lives, including William Edward Bowes of Hartlepool.
