The Devonshire-class Armoured Cruiser HMS Hampshire sank off the Orkneys after striking a mine, on June 5th, 1916. Lord Kitchener and his staff were among the six hundred and fifty men lost, as were two crewmen from the Hartlepools, Ernest J. Banwell and Adolph Coles Charlton.
