The Edgar-class Protected Cruiser HMS Hawke, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-9, off the East coast of Scotland, on October 15th, 1914. Five hundered and twenty five of her crew were lost, including seven from the Hartlepools: Arthur Cockrill, Harry Thomas Draper, James C.F. Gamble, Andrew Hogg, William Morrison, Robert William Smith, and John William Winship.
