On a voyage unescorted from the Tyne for Port Churchill, Hudson Bay in ballast & with a total complement of 34 the Firby was torpedoed by German submarine U-48 (Herbert Schultze) & after 5 hits sank in 59.40N/13.50W on 11 September 1939. The crew abandoned ship & were picked up by HMS Fearless & landed at Scapa Flow. Master Thomas Prince.
