The school, which appears to have been off Northgate on the corner of Darlington Street and Hart Street, seems to have opened in July 1896 according to the Log Book in Teesside Archives. It was under the management of Hartlepool School Board and on that date the head admitted 119 scholars. he said 'I find that on examination the children in Standard 1 are in a very backward condition as regards attainment and discipline. Few can attempt to read the simplest words'
The school closed in 1903 and children were transferred to the new Baltic Street School.
