Built in 1866, the Borough Hall used to be the hub of the old Hartlepool with the courts, Police Station and local authority all working from it.

Taken in the early 1900s, the image looks down Middlegate looking west towards the Victoria Dock.

The two houses with bay windows  on the right are still in existence and now beautifully renovated. The Borough Hall is very  much the same from outside . However all the buildings on the left have long since been demolished. Interestingly, although the intrically patterened lamp post on the right is no longer there, there is one exactly the same on the opposite side of the road.

These shops were by the corner with Northgate.  The photograph dates from May 1968.

The photo is taken from Friendship Lane looking east up Middlegate. In the distance is a pile of coal delivered to the Borough Hall and this was quite a common sight in the town when there were coal mines in South Durham. Probably taken in the 1930s. The building on the right with the fancy brickwork was Barnett Brothers and is still there today. On the left is The Ship Inn which is still there also.
