In the 1930s and 40s, electricity was provided by Hartlepool Borough Council.
In the 1920s,1930s and 1940s, electricity was provided by West Hartlepool Country Borough Council and in 1946, there were 18,600 consumers.In 1929, there was a West Hartlepool Electricity Showroom in lower Church Street but the building, Electra House on the photo still exists and is next door to Quattro Mori Italian restaurant. Before moving to Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, Electra House had for some years been The North Eastern Electricity Board as electricity was nationalised in 1947.

However below the shelf are some gas fires which are the same as those in an advert found on the internet for gas fires in the late 1920s . The vacuum cleaners and electric fans also appear to date from the 1920s judging by internet reesarch.

More detail »A State of Emergency was called on February 9th 1972. coal supplies were dwindling and this coincided with cold weather. Hartlepool and south east Durham were given code numbers as shown on this list. From February 9th 1972, Hartlepool Mail published a list showing when areas would have no electricity that day.
In some cases, shops did not open during those hours and if there was to be no electricity at the start of the day, schools would be closed for part of the day.
