A civic procession at old Hartlepool with a police sergeant acting as a mace bearer. They are going past the Borough buildings in Middlegate.

A view of Hartlepool Headland taken from the tower of St. Hilda's church, circa 1955. The building on the left is Harrison's Chemist where I bought my first camera at 12 years old.
In the background is the CMEW Crane, Swan Neck Crane and the Sheer Legs plus of course the old Coal Staithes.

In the dock are the two tug boats Hart and Stranton and the old dredger Robert de Bruce (red) .  One of the two black funnels is the trawler Friarage which at the time was skippered by Matty Waugh and every time he returned to port he would blow his whistle/horn to the tune of "cock a doodle do"

On the extreme right, the building with the two green doors, is the Ice House where they used to make slabs of ice and crush it for the fishing fleet fed to the boats by the shute which is the black line above the green doors. The black chimney top right is possibly the old rope works.

Hartlepool Ferry is on the centre right. On the skyline, from left to right is the spire of St. Mary's Church, St. Hilda's Church tower and the Borough Hall building.

This image from the early 1950s shows a band passing the Borough Hall. In the background,part of Northgate can be seen and also part of Southgate.

Built in 1866, the Borough Hall used to be the hub of the old Hartlepool with the courts, Police Station and local authority all working from it.

The Borough Hall is shown here decorated for the Coronation of 1953.

Difficult to read the incription on the reverse but it possibly says HMS Waspite Luncheon and the date is 1933. The ship apparently earned the most battle honours of any Royal Navy ship serving in both First and Second World Wars before being scrapped in 1950.

It is assumed that perhaps in 1933, the ship docked in Hartlepool and it appears that there was some type of civic reception in the Borough Hall.

Taken in the early 1900s, the image looks down Middlegate looking west towards the Victoria Dock.

The two houses with bay windows  on the right are still in existence and now beautifully renovated. The Borough Hall is very  much the same from outside . However all the buildings on the left have long since been demolished. Interestingly, although the intrically patterened lamp post on the right is no longer there, there is one exactly the same on the opposite side of the road.

Visit of HRH Princess Mary August 10th 1926, showing a large number of people at a formal dinner in the Borough Hall Hartlepool, however it is difficult to identify the Princess in the image.

In 1951, this St Patrick's Night dance at the Borough Hall advertised nylons and cigarettes as prizes. In the immediate post war years, these were somewhat luxury items still.
