Fate

The steamship Lastingham was wrecked on the North Western Point of Cape Jackson, Port Gore, South Island, New Zealand, during a north-westerly gale on September 1st, 1884. The ship was on a voyage from London to Wellington wth a general cargo. Eighteen lives were lost. Master Alexander C. Morrison.

Rails salvaged from the wreck were later used in the construction of a railway line along the foreshore of Pentone Beach, for the line running between Wellington and Hutt Park.
The wreck herself is now a popular dive site.
