In convoy ONS-154 on a voyage from the Tyne for Loch Ewe, Boston & Trinidad with a cargo of coal & mail & a total complement of 37 Melrose Abbey was torpedoed by German submarine U-356 (Gunther Ruppelt) and sunk in the North Atlantic on December 27th, 1942. Master Frederick J. Ormond. One gunner and six crewmen were lost.
