LAUNCH AT WEST HARTLEPOOL

Yesterday, Messrs. William Gray and Company. Limited launched the handsome steel screw steamer Hans B, for A/s Borgen, for whom they have built several vessels, registered abroad, under different heading.

She will take the highest class in Lloyd’s register, and is of the following dimensions, viz. : Length over all, 377ft.; breadth, 50ft. 9in.; and depth, 28ft. 4 ½ in., with long bridge, poop, and top-gallant forecastle. The saloon, staterooms, captain’s, officers, and engineers’ rooms, etc., will be fitted up with houses on the bridge deck, and the crew’s berths in the forecastle.

The hull is built with deep frames, cellular double bottom, and aft peak tank. The vessel has eight steam winch exhausting into winch condenser, steam steering gear amidships, hand screw gear aft, patent direct steam windlass, large horizontal multitubular donkey boiler, shifting boards throughout, stockless anchors, telescopic masts, with fore and aft rig, boats on deck overhead and all requirements for a first class cargo steamer.

Triple-expansion engines are being supplied by the Central Marine Engineering Works of the builders, having cylinders 26in., 42in., and 70in. diameter, with a piston stroke of 48in., and two large steel boilers for a working pressure of 180lbs. per square inch.

The ship and machinery have been built under the superintendence of Mr. P. Bahnsen and Mr. Hans B. Olsen, jun., on behalf of the owners, and the ceremony of naming the steamer “Hans B” was gracefully performed by Mrs. Olsen, West Hartlepool.

TRIAL TRIP OF THE s.s. HANS B

This handsome steel screw steamer Hans B, built by Messrs. William Gray and Co. Ltd for A & S Bergen, for whom they have built several vessels, registered abroad, had her trial trip on Thursday.

Triple-expansion engines have been supplied by the Central Marine Engineering Works of the builders, having cylinders 26in., 42in., and 70in. diameter, with a piston stroke of 48in., and two large steel boilers adapted for a working pressure of 180lbs. per square inch.

There were on board Mr. Stoussen Mr. Hans B. Olsen, jun, and Mr. Peter Bahnsen representing the owners; Mr. James Innes, Lloyd’s Registry, Mr. Arnold Jones represented the ship builders and Mr. J. B. Williams the engine builders.

After adjustment of compasses, the vessel was headed to the North, and a run made along the coast to the Tyne and back, The performance of ship and machinery giving entire satisfaction to all concerned, and the mean speed being 12 ¼ knots. The vessel afterwards proceeded on her voyage.
