In 1869 the Asie inaugurated the commercial lines with India via the Suez Canal & on 8 January 1870 she was the first merchant ship to transit the Suez Canal for India.
The Asie was bound from Marseilles for Barcelona & the steamer Ajaccio in postal service between Cetti & Algiers were in collision during foggy weather off Barcelona about 2am on 5 May 1887. The Asie sank almost immediately & the crew & passengers that could be found were picked up by the Ajaccio’s boats & landed at Port Vendres. A stoker & four passengers were drowned.
