Miscellaneous: August 1871 she picked up the crew of the abandoned steamer TW Rhodes; 29 June 1872 at Ilford Court Richard Hooper, steward aged 54, was charged with smuggling tea, tobacco & cigars. He was searched as he left the ship when it was moored at Victoria Docks. The charge of smuggling tea was withdrawn but the value of the tobacco & cigars was £1.15s.7d & he was ordered to pay three times that or be imprisoned for one month.
Voyages: June 1877 Dundee for Cardiff; 19 January 1882 arrived at Auckland, New Zealand with 540 passengers; June 1883 put into Table Bay partially dismasted; February 1888 London for Melbourne.
The Roman Empire left Liverpool on 29 July 1890 bound for Mollendo, Peru with a cargo of coal, a crew of 32 & the wife of the master. Last spoken to in August she was not heard of again. She was posted as missing by Lloyds on 12 March 1891.
