The steamship Cyrene was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-31, some 15 miles north of Bardsey Island, Cardigan Bay, on April 5th, 1918. The ship was on a voyage from the Tyne to Blaye, France, with a cargo of coal.
Twenty four crew were lost including two from West Hartlepool: William Minto and Henry Parkinson.
