Northumbria sailed from Montreal with wheat on 30 October 1877 bound for Queenstown for orders. On 5 November, during a snow storm, she stranded at Martin’s Bay on the coast of Anticosti. Her crew abandoned her & were landed at Gaspe. The vessel was valued at about £6,000 & her cargo £10,000. At the inquiry into the casualty it was found that the master ought to have shaped a course that would not have brought him so close to the coast. His certificate was suspended for three months.
