The current school officially opened in 1968 and replaced the school in Musgrave Street (now Hucklehoven Way) which opened in 1877. The original school also had a cookery school built onto it in 1883 but this moved to Park Road in 1894. In 1902, the old cookery premises became a school for children with learning difficulties.
10 year old John Thompson is seen here painting part of a frieze depicting British monarchs as part of the Coronation celebrations. Robert Wood, historian and also head of Ward Jackson school at the time, felt it important that the children knew the history of their country.
