The Wesleyan School first opened in 1871 in Sunday School premises in Robinson Street (off Tower Street).

A new school opened in 1885 in Avenue Road and in 1904 was sold for £2,750  to West Hartlepool Education

Committee becoming Avenue Road School.

The first headteacher Mr Dunbavand (who was at both Robinson Street and Avenue Road) seems to have had some considerable respect and an impressive list of 'old boys' and their achievements is listed in WR Owen's 1913 book. See note.

The school  was on the corner of Avenue Road and Thornton Street where the car park now stands behind the Yorkshire Bank in York Road.
