More detail »Taken in the 1950s, the Wesley can be seen on the left and the Northern Daily Mail Office on the far right. The area on the right has been completely demolished and rebuilt. Behind the buses, the roof of the Town Hall can be seen.
Somebody with a knowledge of buses, has inscribed on the reverse of the image: Left is a United Bristol single deck bus service 40 to Sunderland. The first double decker is a United Bristol service 40A from Easington Village and Peterlee. THe bus at the rear is a Sunderland District Leyland service 40 from Sunderland.
This was in the days when there was a very thriving bus station which was constantly full of buses wearing the livery of many different North East companies. it stood where the 'transport interchange' can now be found close to the Marina Bridge.
Information from Stephen Young states that the building on the right of the image with Public Post on the gable end was the Peal Assurance House.

More detail »Looking northwest from the south side of Powlett Road looking at the roundabout which opened in October 1948. Easington Road is on the left and the BISF (steel or 'tin' houses as they were known when they were quickly constructed after World War 2) can be seen.
Winterbottom Avenue is the road off to the right on the roundabout and at the time was still called Raby Road until 1967. The former line of Howbeck Lane is a path in the centre.

West Hartlepool rugby club was on the left and players would change there and walk across to the ground on Clarence Road .
Parts of the Terrace dated from the mid 1850s.

On the corner of Raby Road (then Hart Road) to the left and York Road to the right stood Jones's Monumental Works. The signage says established 1872. Today across the road from Mill House Baths there is an empty site and advertising hoardings in the place of the business.
The reverse of the picture says Francis Jones Memorial Sculptor.

More detail »The image appears to be from the 1920s. On the left, in Raby Road is Howbeck Terrace and then after the shop would be Middleton Road. Hart Road Methodist Church is on the other side of Middleton Road. All buildings on the left are now demolished. Raby Road continues towards the town after the crossroads but before 1967 was called Hart Road. On the right is the North Cemetery wall, then Hart Lane. The shops on the right are little changed today.
